Created to celebrate the news that I was to become a great-grandmother, The Matriarch explores family, memory and inheritance.
Housed within a rescued grandmother clock, twelve altered books are chained to the clock case, echoing the chained books of ancient libraries.Â
The clock becomes both archive and family tree - a place where stories, memories and fragments of lives are gathered and preserved for future generations.
The spectacles beneath the clock are quite litterally rose-tinted - reflecting the way family memories soften and change over time.
Inspired by the precious chained libraries of the medieval world.
Although the clock was stripped down and repurposed, the original chimes remain. Pulling the hanging key beneath the clock face still sets them ringing - a gentle reminder that time continues to pass, carrying stories from one generation to the next.
A cabinet of small treasures gathered through a lifetime of looking closely at the world.
A stitched family tree celebrating connection across generations.
The final book celebrates the descendants - the next branches of the family tree and the generations yet to come.
The altered books form a family archive, each one preserving a different story, memory or connection.
